  • Manufacturers shortlisted: 5

  • Selected manufacturer: HAPA

  • Outcome: Successful completion of the first collection and an ongoing manufacturing partnership

Background

In 2024, a North American childrenswear brand approached Hinsourcing to find a Chinese manufacturer capable of developing and producing a custom sequin collection.

The brand’s founder, Austin, wanted to create a distinctive collection with a strong visual identity. In addition to achieving the desired sparkle and decorative effect, the garments needed to provide the comfort, workmanship and consistency expected of childrenswear.

Austin chose to explore manufacturing in China because of the country’s well-developed textile and apparel supply chain. From fabrics, sequins and trims to pattern development, sewing and garment production, Chinese manufacturers could offer the resources required to develop the collection while supporting stable production as the brand grew.

The client was not simply looking for the lowest-priced supplier. The objective was to find a long-term manufacturing partner that could understand the brand’s designs, support product development, execute the sequin details consistently and maintain quality as order volumes increased.

Sequin childrenswear presents more production challenges than standard basic garments. The color, density, direction and attachment method of the sequins can all affect the finished appearance. Sequin security, loose threads, potentially rough edges, fabric distortion, measurement deviations and consistency between approved samples and bulk production also require careful control.

Finding a manufacturer with relevant product and process experience was therefore central to the project.

Our Approach

After receiving the client’s requirements, Hinsourcing translated the initial product concept into a sourcing brief that manufacturers could understand and evaluate.

The brief covered the garment styles, fabrics, size range, sequin effects, trims, branding, packaging, estimated quantities and delivery expectations.

Based on these requirements, we searched the Guangzhou apparel supply chain and identified five manufacturers with the potential to handle the project.

Rather than comparing suppliers based on unit price alone, Hinsourcing evaluated them across several areas:

  • Experience producing childrenswear or similar garment categories;

  • Ability to execute the required sequin patterns and decorative techniques;

  • Pattern-making, sampling and custom product development capabilities;

  • Transparency regarding fabric, sequin and trim sourcing;

  • Ability to control sequin attachment, stitching, measurements and batch consistency;

  • Production capacity for both the initial order and potential repeat orders;

  • Quotation structure, minimum order quantities, sample lead times and production lead times;

  • Communication speed and willingness to respond to product-development feedback;

  • Readiness to cooperate with production monitoring and quality inspections.

Sample development was an important part of the evaluation. A manufacturer may be able to produce one attractive handmade sample without having the systems required to reproduce it consistently during bulk production.

We therefore considered not only the appearance of the samples, but also each manufacturer’s ability to carry the approved fabrics, colors, measurements, sequin placement and workmanship standards into production.

Following several rounds of communication, capability assessment and comparison, Hinsourcing organized the findings so that the client could clearly understand the strengths, limitations and potential risks of each candidate.

After reviewing the five manufacturers, the client selected HAPA as the best overall match for the project.

Product Development and Production Coordination

Once the manufacturer had been selected, Hinsourcing continued coordinating between the client and HAPA to turn the brand’s creative direction into clear production requirements.

The development process focused on:

  • Confirming the fabric, colors and overall sequin effect;

  • Defining sequin placement, arrangement and attachment methods;

  • Reviewing the size chart, garment fit and measurement tolerances;

  • Checking stitching, seams, loose threads and decorative workmanship;

  • Confirming brand labels, care labels and packaging requirements;

  • Communicating sample feedback and revision requests;

  • Aligning the final approved version before bulk production.

This process helped reduce misunderstandings between the brand and the manufacturer. It also created a clearer production reference for maintaining consistency between the approved design and the finished garments.

Through continued coordination, the client’s original concept was converted into a production-ready collection, and the first custom sequin childrenswear order was successfully completed.

Results

Hinsourcing identified and screened five childrenswear manufacturers in Guangzhou that matched the general direction of the project.

The candidates were compared based on their relevant product experience, sequin workmanship, development capabilities, production capacity, quality awareness, commercial terms and responsiveness.

HAPA was selected as the manufacturer offering the strongest overall fit for the client’s requirements.

The client successfully developed and produced its first custom sequin childrenswear collection, transforming the original brand concept into a commercially manufacturable product.

China’s established textile and apparel supply chain provided access to the fabrics, trims, decorative techniques and production capabilities needed to support the project.

Following the successful completion of the first order, the client continued working with HAPA. The relationship remains active today, developing from a single sourcing project into an ongoing manufacturing partnership.

The Value of the Project

This case demonstrates that sourcing a clothing manufacturer involves much more than choosing the lowest quotation.

For a customized product such as sequin childrenswear, the right supplier must match the brand in terms of product expertise, manufacturing techniques, order size, quality expectations and communication style.

Hinsourcing helped the client convert a creative idea into clear sourcing and production requirements, identify suitable manufacturers in China and compare the candidates through a structured selection process.

The result was not only the successful launch of a new collection, but also the establishment of a Chinese manufacturing partnership capable of supporting the brand’s continued development.
